Think Ahead--Aim High

Inner Wheel District 20

District Chairman 2011/2012

Tricia Harris

(Crewkerne)

There are 28 Clubs in District 20 situated in Somerset and parts of

Dorset and Wiltshire

I have been in Inner Wheel for just over thirty years and have held numerous posts at Club level and several on the District Executive over the years.

I have three grown up sons, who are all married with families I have ten grandchildren, six of which are boys and four girls.

Outside of Inner Wheel my interests lay with swimming and lifesaving, gardening and cross-stitch also reading when I get the chance.

Although supposedly retired I still get called back to work on a regular basis to train the Lifeguards and run any courses necessary. I have recently achieved National Judge status for Lifesaving and look forward to participating in an official role at future Lifesaving competitions.

Last year I took up short mat bowls and belong to the local club. This is purely a recreational hobby, one which I can enjoy with no pressures!

The charity I have chosen for my year is The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.   They do such wonderful work although we all hope we will never need them.   Click the link for more details.

Burnham Inner Wheel club was delighted to welcome District Chairman Tricia Harris to their October meeting. District Chairman Tricia gave a very interesting account of her life and also entertained us with the history of the club going back over many years.  This evoked many happy memories, of past members and reminding us what a fun loving and busy club we have always been.

President Sandra Moon presented the District Chairman with a gift on behalf of the Club, and wished her a happy year in office.

We were very please to greet our District Chairman Tricia Harris at our first evening meeting after the summer holidays.  We were treated to a very interesting talk about Tricia's life, all of her interests.  Tricia also reminded us of some of the things that our club have done in the past 70+ years.  We have moved from afternoon meetings to evenings, we have had fund raising events of all kinds, from Christmas Bazaars, friendship meals to stalls on the seafront selling allsorts of bric-a-brac (we hope to reintroduce this latter project again next summer).  Altogether a very happy evening and we hope that Tricia found her way home safely even though the main route out of Weymouth was closed overnight.

At our November meeting we were honoured by the presence of District Chairman, Tricia Harris, who regaled us with a potted history of her career, spent in education and the leisure industry. Tricia has been a member of Inner Wheel for some thirty years, during which time she has held numerous posts at club level and several on the District Executive. Whilst urging    members to work closely with their Rotary Clubs, to think ahead and aim high, Tricia, was also at pains to remind us, that today's peacock feathers are     tomorrow's feather dusters. Tricia congratulated West Woodspring on their recent thirty fifth celebrations and evoked happy memories as she reminded members of past activities and achievements. She finished by reading a poem by club member Di Stenning, which was as thought provoking today as when it was written.

District Chairman Tricia Harris visited the February Meeting of the Inner Wheel Club of Frome when Gill Barnes Frome's President was pleased to induct Yvonne Covill, wife of Rotarian David Covill, into the club.

Frome, a busy and vibrant club, also had the pleasure of inducting another new member at the March meeting.  Margaret Gilmour, wife of Rotarian Doug Gilmour a new member of Frome Rotary, has also joined our ranks and is going to speak to the club at the May meeting when the subject will be 'Working with the Gurkhas'.

Frome Inter-Club is being held on 15th March at Beckington Village Hall when the guest speaker will be Sam Holliday, editor of the Somerset Standard and editor-in-chief of Bath News and Media. A large amount of guests are expected to attend this interesting and pleasurable occasion.

Next month the club is organising a Fashion Show in aid of the British Heart Foundation. The event will take place at The Assembly Rooms behind The Memorial Theatre, on Friday 27th April at 7.30 p.m. and is being staged by Ribbons of Westbury.  Tickets which cost £8 and include a glass of wine are available from 01373 463427 and also at the Inter-Club.
